Nintendo recently unveiled some of their projects at E3 (Which we all thought was dead) and I thought they were pretty darn awesome.
First off, Super Mario Galaxy 2. Hooray for sequels? The original was pretty nice... but their gameplay trailer did not seem to really introduce much more than yoshi - It's likely this will just be 120 more levels with some new powerups, but the original was good fun, so this should be worth it, I think. Next, the NEW new super mario bros. - If you remember the DS original, it's pretty much the same but with a fourplayer mechanic with Mario, Luigi... annnnnd... blue and yellow toad. Aww. I was hoping for another non-toad character. oh well. Lastly, the most curious of them all: Metriod "Other M". It looks like the cross between metroid and a fighting game... It seems like it's sort of schizophrenic... being a shooter sometime and a fighter sometime, but Nintendo could potentially pull it off well. Or they could horribly butcher it. Fingers crossed. (Also, seeing Samus talk is disquieting.) This game also looks pretty... not pretty. The CG cutscenes are gorgeous, but the game shots... don't match up to Corruption. Odd. So. Anyone else have any ideas? -------------------- <Witty quote here>

I would have to call myself a Metroid fan, more so at its 2D handheld platform/shooter roots, but I still really like it.
SO..yeah. I agree, this could revive the franchise to greater glory, it damn it to a video game hell (forced to hang with Sonic). Oh yeah, and you fight Ridley. Again. Surprise. -------------------- Spokesman elect, scholar, emo poet, and all around nice guy... more or less

Seeing that preview of "the next Metroid game" I am extremely disappointed. It looks like some Korean rip-off of the noble Metroid series, no offense to Korean games. The graphics look cheesy and the bone structure Final Fantasy-ish, and it is WAY to revealing of the backstory without so much of story. All I saw in that video was "ooh look we can make gamez with action!" That's not what Metroid is about for me.
First: apparent gameplay. Is this supposed to be for the Wii? If so, shame on the developers. This is lame. 3rd-person view, stylized fight scenes? NOT Metroid. At least, I won't accept it as such. If this is for the DS this is a little more acceptable, because the player needs to see the characters' movements and stylized fighting helps this, but shame on the developers if they hope to sell this for the Wii. I notice this is "Project M," a group I have never heard of, so I'm not surprised they know nothing of the essence of Metroid. Second: speech. No! No! No! I'll say it again. No! Look at the first what, 10 metroid games. Notice the environment. Is anyone human? Does anyone SPEAK? Does SAMUS SPEAK? I think not! One of the things I admired was the lack of human speech and the feeling of abandonment. It appears that Metroid's class is going down the tubes. Third: environment. Terrible. This isn't a Metroid game. Metroid has the feeling of ancientness, the "everything has gone and died" feeling. The games are dark, and scary, and evil. You are alone in a world, and have to work with random events to live. The world isn't designed for you. You have to work your way around the world. The first two games did a good job of this, as well as Fusion. There is no military base behind you, and you don't fight hordes of beasties every five steps. Puzzles, man, PUZZLES! (Now, for the DS this is a different story. But only slightly different.) After all that I must admit that I have only played through Fusion all the way through. I own Prime 1 and 2, and the one for the Wii, but they are too challenging for me (I know, I suck). But I am willing to call myself a Metroid fan. "If you can't please the player base, don't make the game" - a piece of advice ignored by many companies to date, not applied to a new one. Nintendo's better than this. Twilight Princess was great. Please make a game like that to honor the Metroid name, not some shootfest. -------------------- "Life is like a hot bath, the longer you stay the more wrinkled you get."

I totally agree, though have one thing to point out. This is presented by Team ninja, the people behind ninja gaiden. I believe this is for wii, but am not certain. I share your thoughts about the backstory and 'feel' of metroid games, though not the speech. I think they could pull off a metroid game with Samus speaking: provided she speaks rarely, with no major conversations. I actually think VERY limited speech could contribute to metroid, but it's one of those super risky things. The environment's always been the joy I've gotten from Metroid games. There IS level design and platforming, but it's done well, hidden. It's really... absorbing! Plus, not knowing ANYTHING about the character was wonderful. It got you... interested. You didn't know who Samus was, or why she was here, or what she sounded like. The anonymity kept you interested in the character far longer than usual. -------------------- <Witty quote here>

My first post..woo...anyway.
So yes..this new metriod game is going to be different...and unique. But one thing you have to realize is..if you beat all the games..you will see they kind of boxed themselves in storyline wise.So they handed the "metroid" aspect of it...to Team Ninja since they said they are no longer going to be making anymore Ninja Gaiden games (probably anyway). So while team ninja makes this game...They will be coming up with a new storyline to entertain us for years to come so don't worry about that. Now I have beat all the metroid games...except for the original NES one..got like halfway through it..then just set it down and never picked it up again.I have also played ninja gaiden 1 and 2...which I enjoy.I think this will be a nice change of pace...at the same time they will probably be making a new DS metroid game...which will have the "feel" you guys mentioned before.Also..if you notice...each game that comes out..they are giving samus a more "human" feel about her...showing her outside her suit a bit more..so her talking rarely will be a nice step. On the mario aspect you guys were talking about...frankly...I stopped enjoying mario games as soon as they came out with the Game cube one...Mario 64 is still king. Also..as a side note Red Steel 2 for the wii looks AMAZING. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-DQ9jxIqClg |

lots of ellipses aside, Mr. Dald has a point. I think I've said this too, if we're gonna go in a more 'melee and action' direction with Metroid, there aren't many better peoples than Team Ninja.
